If there is no ammonia smell, first be sure the camper or RV is level and plug it into a power outlet. To verify that you have power, check the refrigerator indicator lights and inside light of the refrigerator. Next, turn the refrigerator on to AC operation. Let the refrigerator run for fifteen minutes. At the end of that time, go to the access door on the outside of the camper and listen for a boiling sound. If this is detected, the unit has lost the gas portion of its charge and requires rebuilding. If you do not hear the boiling sound, continue to run the unit for an hour and then go back to the access door on the outside of the camper.  and see if the large circular housing on the right side of the refrigerator is hot to the touch. Also, look for any yellow stains, yellow powder, or an ammonia smell. If any one of these are detected, cut the unit off immediately. It is defective and needs immediate rebuilding.

If there is heat in the circular tube about six to eight inches from the bottom. Then, go into the camper and open the freezer door. See if there is any frost or if the back of the freezer feels very cold. If there is no heat detected on the outside the refrigerator, the problem is most likely controls or a heating element. If the unit is getting cold in the freezer, run it for twelve hours with a thermometer inside the refrigerator section. The temperature should be in the 30's. If the temperature has not come down to the teens in the twelve-hour period then the unit probably has a high pressure leak, which requires rebuilding.
